A Fitting, Frustrating Finale

The Redskins squandered a 10-point halftime lead over the 49ers Sunday to end a frustrating season on a familiar note – losing to a team they should’ve beaten!

QB Jason Campbell led the Skins on a game-tying 55-yard drive in the final five minutes to tie it. On fourth down and goal from the 2-yard line, Campbell (pictured) dropped back and, with all receivers covered, took off for the end zone to tie the game with 1:09 to go. But, yet again, the "prevent defense" proved that the only thing it prevents is you winning the game, and 49ers kicker Joe Nedney kicked a 39-yard field goal as time expired to give San Francisco a 27-24 win.

Campbell completed 18 of 30 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown to Randle El. RB Clinton Portis carried 29 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. WR Santana Moss and TE Chris Cooley each caught 6 passes for 68 and 57 yards respectively, the longest being 17 yards, signaling again the lack of a deep threat due to pitiful pass-protection. Hopefully, the Redskins will find some offensive line help in the off-season or through the draft.

The Skins surprising 6-2 start in the 2008 season reversed to 2-6 after the midpoint of their schedule as they finished 8-8. The game was not televised locally due to the playoff implications of the Dallas-Philadelphia matchup. Only football-related joy of the day was seeing the Cowboys get killed on national television.

Wait’l next year.
